Savor the Writing Experience

  • Post a comment

I was at Walgreens last night writing a check.  As I always do, I took my Bullet Pen out of my purse and played with it a little before opening it up and using it.  I like to do that because I like to show it off and I like to savor the writing experience.

I started thinking about that as I was waiting for my receipt and it made me feel sad for all the people who can’t enjoy their pens.  Whether its letter writing or bill paying, there is so much more enjoyment when you are using a handsome, high quality writing implement.

I am making it my mission this Christmas to give my loved one’s the Fisher Pen experience.  I gave a few Space Pens last year and I am still being thanked.  I am excited this year because I can also choose from theHandmade Pens at Cyber Space Pens.  The Crushed Sunflower Shells Carbara is one that I become more fond of every time I look at it.  It has a masculine look to it, I can see my brother loving it.  It comes with the Triangular Maple Wood Box which serves as a holder as well as a display.  I will definitely have it engraved … I just haven’t figured out what to put on it yet.

Forever Boys

What is it about boys and flashlights?  Every Christmas I get a couple to stick in their stockings and you’d think it was the latest and greatest video game. “Look, at it when I shine it on the TV!  Look at the ceiling when I do it this way!”  It never ceases to amaze and amuse me.  Of course, within 48 hours my boys have to take them apart to see how they work and if they could reassemble the parts in a different way and make something cooler.

So, I wasn’t surprised when we were browsingCyber Space Pens site for a suitable birthday gift for Grandpa and they zeroed in on the Space Beam.  Oh my goodness, you’d have thought it was the Holy Grail!  A small argument followed as my daughter was not on board with the idea … she was aiming for the Chrome Golf Ball Pen.  We reached a compromise and decided to save the Golf Ball Pen for Christmas.

I knew Grandpa would like it, but I didn’t quite expect the scene that followed …. “Wow, check it out!  Look at it when I shine it out the window!  It’s so sharp!  Let’s go down the basement and test it out!”  I guess boys never outgrow flashlights!  I just hope Grandpa has outgrown the need to take them apart!

Influencing Young Minds

I teach a class of ninth graders once a week.   Teaching is at once exhilarating and intimidating, because those kids take my words at face value.  They believe and trust me, so I try to be careful and extremely intentional with every word I say.  I want to teach them, influence them, but not mislead them.

So, in using my teaching power for the good of my students … I have, of course, already introduced them to Fisher Space Pens and have even let them all write with my favorite Bullet Pen.  Oh, how their young faces lit up!  They had so many questions … and I had answers.

I truly love each student in that class and have already decided that on our last day I will give them each a Rocket Pen.  Rocket Pens are great for such occasions, because they are affordable enough to buy for a large group of people, yet they still contain the Zero Gravity Ink Cartridge that makes theFisher Pens great.  They come in four colors, with the ink matching the barrel: red, blue, black, and silver.  I think I will get them all the same color, the Black Rocket Pen, because most teachers prefer black ink. I want them to be able to use their pen as much as possible, thereby impressing their friends!

X-Marks Man - Still a Stranger

I woke up this morning and discovered that we were out of milk.  I decided to run to the gas station and get some before the kids got up, which I have done many times.  I didn’t bother to brush my hair, throw on make-up, or even change clothes.  I dashed in there sporting my pj’s and bedhead, as I have done many times before, grabbed my milk and decided to get a big ole coffee to reward my early morning efforts.  As I was selecting the roast I would be savoring, someone said my name.

I turned around and was face-to-face with John, the X-Marks Pen guy from the grocery store.  Did I mention I hadn’t bothered to brush my teeth either?  I froze.  Fortunately, I think he thought I just didn’t recognize him, so he introduced himself as the guy from the store with the Fisher Space Pen.  Again, I was frozen, and I didn’t dare say a word since my teeth were yet unbrushed.  I think he felt as though I thought he was weird, because he started rambling on about my Bullet Pen and how he thought we had a connection but maybe he was wrong.  It seemed to last forever … he even told me about buying his Mom a Sterling Silver Neck Chain Pen because she was elderly and not getting around so well anymore.  The Neck Chain Penwith its 24″ chain was just what she needed so that she could have a pen handy  to do her crossword puzzle and sudoku and she loved it especially since he had “Love, John” engraved on it … had I ever seen one of those?  I nodded - still looking like a deer in the headlights I’m sure.

I wanted to tell him how sweet he was to do that for his mom.  I wanted to tell him that just the fact that he knew about Fisher Pens was enough for me … I would marry him tomorrow.  But I just stood there, nodding my head like an idiot.  Finally, he awkwardly said it was nice to see me again and he was sorry if he bothered me, and that was it.

New Possibilities

I must be honest.  I am feeling a little conflicted about the new Handmade Pens at Cyber Space Pens.  Until my friend sent me the link, I never thought I would own a pen that wasn’t a Fisher Space Pen.  Yes, I realize most of them have the Fisher refills and I also realize that the fine people at Cyber Space Pens would never steer me in the direction of a writing instrument that is anything less than excellent.  I guess it’s not a bad thing to open my mind to new possibilities.

My favorite new possibility, the Ocean Current Ultra Cigar Pen, makes me sigh.  It’s just so pretty.  I didn’t even know what a cigar pen was until I saw it … and I thought I knew it all when it came to pens!  I am humbled.  The colors are rich and elegant yet at at the same time cheerful.  The gold and silver accents add to the overall classy look, and I find myself just staring at it.

Yes, I think it’s okay for me to love this Handmade Pen.  I think even Paul C. Fisher would have wanted one, though I see him more as the Stabilized Buckeye Burl Executive type.

Handmade Pens a Rare Gift

I would love to be creative and make something with my own hands, but I just never did have that ability. I love all things handmade: clothing, furniture, and now these awesome pens.

I had never seen such amazing pens before I came across these. They come in a variety of finishes, wood and acrylic, something for everyone. My favorite instantly was the Pearl Violet Acrylic Cigar Pen. The color on it is amazing–so uniqe and deep.

The pen comes in it’s own beautiful black leatherette box with white lining. I love having it in my desk drawer. It just feels so lush!

And the pen comes with a genuine Fisher Space Pen refill, so I won’t miss the technology I love so much!

Love at First Sight

I think I have met my soul mate.  I was checking out at the store with huge cart load of groceries and I couldn’t find my Titanium Bullet Pen.

Apparently the very ruggedly handsome gentleman in line behind me noticed my panic because he offered me his pen, just I found my treasured bullet.  I smiled and held up my pen as looked at the pen he was holding out … and my heart stopped.  He was extending his Black X-Mark Flat Cap Pen in my direction!

Not only was it a Fisher Space Pen … it was a manly Fisher Space Pen.  It seemed like time slowed to a crawl as I could see that he was realizing that I was a fellow Space Pen owner.  I quickly turned it to show my name, so grateful that it was engraved, and he followed suit!  It was clear we were completely on the same wave length.

The impatient check-out lady brought us back to reality and I proceeded to write my check and leave the store … and the stranger named John.  I am going to be shopping there a lot more often!

A Bullet for a Birthday

My daughter is turning twelve on Halloween.  She has known what one of her birthday presents will be since January, a Fuchsia Flurry Bullet Pen engraved with her name in Edwardian Script.  How does she know that?  She ask for it specifically last winter and has reminded me almost monthly, “Don’t forget, you’re getting me a Fisher Space Pen for my birthday .. theFuchsia Flurry one.”  I thought about ordering aPurple Passion Bullet Pen too, just to mess with her, then when I give her the real one I’d get to keep it for myself (go Vikings).  I decided against it, though, since she will undoubtedly read this and know my plan.

I am proud of that girl, she knows quality when she sees it!  Now if I could just get her to love football…

Garth Brooks, maybe?

I ran into an old friend from high school last weekend.  We had a blast just talking and reminiscing about classes and friends and all that.  It was one of those times that could have been a Hallmark commercial … and then it got even better.  Naturally, at some point I started talking about Fisher Space Pens and about my beloved Bullet Pen, and he said … “Oh yeah, I have one of those - it writes upside down.  Did you ever see that Seinfeld episode … ?”

After recovering from my shock and brushing back a tear - I asked him how he came to be in possession of his Fisher Pen and which one he had.  He got the pen from his dad a while back, it’s a Lacquered Brass Classic Bullet Pen.  So, not only did he know about and these pens, he also valued his enough to keep for it all these years.

What began as a Hallmark commercial turned into a Country Music Video, as I sat there pondering, what if I had known this about him in High School.  I can see the video now, he tucks his pen back into his pocket, we hug … and he walks off into the sunset.   I am left standing there, smiling at the thought of what might have been.  I wonder who’d be singing….

Military Gift

The Chrome Military Bullet Pens are among the sharpest of the Fisher Space Pens.  It seems fitting to have a line of “Bullet Pens” designated to the military and this line also come in Matte Black and Marine Corps Red.  The Chrome Bullets stand out among the three though, perhaps because they have that polished look.  They are definitely not the pens for combat, they are for a dress uniform or a retired soldier context.  Actually, one of these pens is the perfect gift for a member who is departing the military.  I got a plaque … it’s neat, but a Fisher Space Pen with the Army Logo on it … I could still be using that!

These pens have the Fisher PR4 black medium point pressurized refill, so they will write upside down, under water, and in any environment you will come across.  You can also buy additional refills, so again, had I been given a Fisher Pen upon departing the Army many years ago, I could have purchased refills and still be using it.

If you know a service member who is actively serving or is nearing the end of their service, consider a gift of a Chrome Military Bullet Pen.  You can engrave it with their name and include their departing rank - or you can engrave the name of their unit on the pen instead.  Either way, twenty years later, they’ll still be using it and remembering where it came from.
