I would love to be creative and make something with my own hands, but I just never did have that ability. I love all things handmade: clothing, furniture, and now these awesome pens. I had never seen such amazing pens before I came across these. They come in a variety of finishes, wood and acrylic, something for everyone. My favorite instantly was the Pearl Violet Acrylic Cigar Pen. The color on it is amazing–so uniqe and deep. The pen comes in it’s own beautiful black leatherette box with white lining. I love having it in my desk drawer. It just feels so lush! And the pen comes with a genuine Fisher Space Pen refill, so I won’t miss the technology I love so much!
I have gone back and plugged in my new-found knowledge as I reread the explanation of what’s going on inside the Fisher Space Pen. It all makes so much sense now!
As I understand it, a normal ballpoint pen has regular liquid ink. When you hold it with the tip down, the ink flows onto the ballpoint. It’s like roll-on deodorant, you have to have the ball end down or the liquid won’t reach it. On a regular pen, the other end of the refill is open so that air replaces the empty space left by the used up ink. This open end is what makes old pens dry up and cease to work.
With a Fisher Pen, the cartridge is pressurized with nitrogen. This means that there is always pressure pushing against the ink so that when the roller releases it, it’s right there ready to go. The special thick ink liquefies when the ballpoint rotates. This part still amazes me - because it’s instantaneous. My logic tells me that if the ink is so thick - it should take a minute to loosen up … but if you’ve ever used a Space Pen, you know it’s ready to write perfectly every time.
I don’t know if this explanation clears it up for anyone, but I am so glad I took the time to understand what’s going on in there!

I am not a big one for details. So when people ask me why Fisher Space Pens can write anywhere I simply say, I don’t know - go read the Cyber Space Pens homepage
and learn all about it. I gave a half-hearted try to learn about it a
while back - but I could never get past the “Thixotropic Ink.” You
see, I Googled it and this is what I got from Wikipedia:
Thixotropy
is the property of some non-Newtonian pseudoplastic fluids to show a
time-dependent change in viscosity; the longer the fluid undergoes
shear stress, the lower is its viscosity. A thixotropic fluid is a
fluid which takes a finite time to attain equilibrium viscosity when
introduced to a step change in shear rate. However, this is not a
universal definition; the term is sometimes applied to pseudoplastic
fluids without a viscosity/time component. Many gels and colloids are
thixotropic materials, exhibiting a stable form at rest but becoming
fluid when agitated.
Can you say, huh? I finally found a definition I can understand this morning from Wictionary:
The
property of certain gels whereby they become fluids when agitated and
return to being solid or semi-solid when allowed to stand.
That’s much easier. Now I will go back an reread the full explanation of the Fisher Pens with my new knowledge. Maybe someday I will be able to give an complete and intelligent answer when people ask why these pens can write in space. It’s good to have goals.

My boys have asked me when they will get their Fisher Space Pen.
It wasn’t the same proud moment as my daughter - because they are a
little young to actually understand the value of the pen. When I do
get them one, it’ll have to be the Trekker Space Pen.
First of all, it’s perfect for boys in that it just has that sporty feel. Second, if I get them a Fisher Pen, they are going to keep it attached to them! Otherwise, who knows where it will end up.
The Space Trekkers are really very cool. They are compact like a Bullet Pen
when they are capped - just 3 7/8″ long. They have a rubberized grip
which adds to the sporty feel. They also come with a carbineer (not
approved for climbing) and a breakaway lanyard so they stay attached -
but are handy when you need them. Of course, Trekkers have the Fisher Refills - so they will write when and where you need them.

Have
you ever had one of those proud parent moments? I had one yesterday.
I was busy working at my computer and my daughter came up and asked if
… she could have a Fisher Space Pen
for her birthday. As I wiped the tear from my eye, I told her she
could and asked which one she wanted. She said it didn’t matter …
which almost caused me to weep.
In reality, I know she likes the Rainbow Titanium Nitride Bullet, Purple Passion Lacquered Bullet, and the Fuschia Flurry Lacquered Bullet Pen - so I won’t have to think too hard when I pick one for her. Even the engraving will be easy - she just wants her name on it. However, she is pretty picky about fonts - so the fact that her choice is virtually limitless - she may have a problem there. Her birthday is not until October, so she’ll have to some time to decide on her lettering.
In the mean time, I am just basking in the pride of my daughter’s exceptional taste.

My boys have great teachers this year, so naturally I have been thinking about getting them Fisher Pens
at the end of the year and I have been trying to get a handle on which
pen for each teacher. They have personalities that are very different
from each other and at this point I am not sure what to get. Right
now, I am leaning toward the Sterling Silver Neck Chain Pen - for the first grade teacher and the Chrome X-Mark Flat Cap Pen for the fourth grade teacher. I think it will be neat to have their names engraved in the form of Mrs. ________.
As I have pondered that, I thought it would be a neat tradition to do that for every teacher they have as they go through elementary school … but then something happened yesterday that gave me pause. I was helping out with recess and I met one of the second grade teachers. Whoa - was she scary! I hope she is not my boy’s teacher next year. If she is, I won’t want to buy her a Fisher Space Pen, but I can’t really buy for one of my boys’ teachers and not the other. Oh well, I will cross that bridge when the time comes … in the mean time, I have two months to decide on this year’s pens.

I
was at the gas station today and I wrote a check … yes, I am one of
those people who still holds up lines with the checkbook. Anyway, I
was looking about my little bottom of my purse pen, which is broken,
and thinking about how I wanted to be writing the check with my new Fisher Space Pen. Of course that could never happen, because I always lose my purse pen, so I wouldn’t risk putting my dear sweet Bullet Pen
in the black hole that seems to lie at the bottom of my purse. Not
only that, I would really hold up the line, because I would have to
tell the person who takes my check all about my pen … people behind me
might get mad.
Believe it or not, I was still pondering this as I drove away from Kwik Star and I cam to the conclusion that I need to get organized enough so that I can get wallet that has a place for a pen and then put a Stowaway Pen in it. I decided that even though the people in line might not like waiting … they would get over it after I tell them all about how awesome my pen is and then they would want one too.

So Valentine’s Day had me faced with a dilemma. You see, that Blueberry Lacquered Bullet Pen with Go Cowboys
engraved on it - I knew who should really get that. I mean, picture me
holding anything touting the Cowboys … but yet … it’s a Fisher Space Pen
… and well, with huge sentimental value. So there I was, looking
across the counter at my Cowboy-loving sweetheart … talk about an
internal struggle! Should I share my bounty? What to do?!?!
In the end, I caved, and I must say I am glad I did. If a fondness for a Fisher was the only measure … I could say I have found my soul mate. He truly treasures his gift even to the point of keeping it in it’s box in a specifically designated place, just like I do. It is taken out only to write with, to hold and admire, and to show off to others. It is never just left laying there like any old pen. It brings a tear to my eye just knowing he gets it.
What more could a girl ask for on the holiday of love?

It’s
a gorgeous day here in Iowa … the sun is shining, it’s warm, and the
snow is almost gone! This weather has me daydreaming about shorts,
flip-flops, and summer sports. Of course, there is only one Fisher Space Pen I could be thinking about today …. yep, the Lime Green Bullet Pen
with the Golf Ball on it. Ahhh … the happy little pen! You know that
any golfer in your life would love this pen, or maybe the Chrome Pen like it if you think Lime Green is too much. I personally think it’s … what was that word?? Oh yeah … happy!
Of course I respect that others may not share my opinion, maybe because they hate golf, maybe because they do not like lime green, maybe because they are mean, or maybe because it’s a different pen that reminds them of sunshine and warmth. I suppose the Fuschia Flurry Bullet or the Rainbow Titanium Bullet could be happy pens for some people, they certainly are cheerful colors.
The bottom line is … spring is Iowa today and it has me as happy as a Lime Green Bullet Pen with the Golf Ball on it!

Someone
asked me which Fisher Space Pen is
my favorite. Hopefully, it’s because she is planning to buy me a present.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t pick only one. It really does depend on my mood.
However, I am pretty consistent with which ones are on the top ten or so list,
and if anyone is paying attention they can already name several that would make
that list.
Assuming that no one is paying attention, except my potential gift-buyer, I will restate my favorites and why.
The focus of this entry will be Bullet Pens, specifically the Lacquered Bullet Pens. First of all, I just love how the Bullets look when capped. It’s unfortunate that the pictures don’t give a better representation of their mere 3-3/4 inch size when capped. As to my favorite among the Lacquered Bullets … it truly is a mood thing, but I go back and forth between the Lime Green Bullet and the Red Cherry Bullet. To me, the clips are an essential part of these pens because the chrome on the clip and the end of the pen provide such a great accent to the vibrant colors.
They are classy, fun, and colorful … Lacquered Bullet Pens with Clips definitely make the top ten.
